Structural Organisation in Animals: key facts for NEET

16 facts the paper keeps asking, each with how it is asked. Copy it onto one page of your notebook: that page is this chapter's handbook.

  1. Four basic tissue types

All complex animals have only four basic tissue types; the heart contains all four (epithelial, connective, muscular, neural).

Asked as: "Which organ is made of all four basic tissue types?"

  2. Common Indian frog

Common Indian frog: Rana tigrina (Indian bullfrog), class Amphibia, phylum Chordata; poikilotherm (cold blooded).

Asked as: match the frog with its class/phylum, or "body temperature varies with surroundings" means?

  3. Aestivation, hibernation and mimicry

Summer sleep = aestivation, winter sleep = hibernation; protective colour change (camouflage) is called mimicry in NCERT.

Asked as: Assertion-Reason on aestivation vs hibernation, or "protective coloration in frog is called?"

  4. Water uptake and skin colour

Frog never drinks water and absorbs it through the skin; dorsal skin olive green with dark spots, ventral uniformly pale yellow.

Asked as: "How does a frog take in water?"

  5. Body divisions, eyes and ear

Body is only head + trunk (neck and tail absent); eyes are covered by a nictitating membrane; the tympanum is the ear.

Asked as: "Which body part is absent in frog?" / function of the nictitating membrane

  6. Limbs and sexual dimorphism

Forelimbs have digits, hind limbs (larger, webbed); males have vocal sacs + copulatory pad on the first digit of the forelimb.

Asked as: "Which features show sexual dimorphism in frog?"

  7. Digestive system

Alimentary canal is short because frog is carnivore; bilobed tongue captures food; duodenum gets bile + pancreatic juice by a common bile duct.

Asked as: "Why is the frog's intestine short?"

  8. Respiration

In water: cutaneous respiration (skin); on land: buccal cavity, skin and lungs; during aestivation/hibernation: skin only.

Asked as: "Respiratory organ of frog during hibernation?"

  9. Heart

Heart has chambers ( atria, ventricle); sinus venosus joins the right atrium; ventricle opens into conus arteriosus (ventral side).

Asked as: "Sinus venosus joins which chamber?"

  10. Circulation type

Circulation is closed with single circulation; a lymphatic system is also present.

Asked as: true/false statements on frog circulation type

  11. Portal systems

Hepatic portal system connects intestine and liver; renal portal system connects lower body and kidney.

Asked as: match the portal system with the organs it links

  12. RBCs and lymph

RBCs are nucleated and contain haemoglobin; lymph lacks a few proteins and RBCs.

Asked as: "Frog RBCs differ from human RBCs in having?"

  13. Excretion

Frog excretes urea, so it is ureotelic; each kidney is made of nephrons (uriniferous tubules).

Asked as: "Nitrogenous waste of adult frog?"

  14. Nervous system

pairs of cranial nerves; midbrain has a pair of optic lobes; hindbrain = cerebellum + medulla oblongata (exits via foramen magnum).

Asked as: "Number of cranial nerves in frog?" / "Optic lobes are part of?"

  15. Sense organs

Eyes and internal ears are well organised and the other sense organs are cell clusters around nerve endings; external ear is absent; ear is used for both hearing and balance.

Asked as: "Which sense organs of frog are well organised structures?"

  16. Reproduction

Testes attach to the kidneys by mesorchium; – vasa efferentia open into Bidder's canal; female lays – ova; fertilisation is external, followed by a tadpole and metamorphosis.

Asked as: "Number of vasa efferentia in frog?" / "Number of ova laid at a time?"

Trap

In the male, the ureter acts as a urinogenital duct (urine + sperms), but in the female the ureters and oviducts open separately into the cloaca. Ovaries have no functional connection with the kidneys.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Male frogs can be distinguished from female frogs due to the presence of vocal sacs and copulatory pad on first digit of fore limbs. Bulging eyes, webbed digit in feet and olive green-coloured skin with dark irregular spots are common in both male and female frogs.
Q2ZoologyNEET UG PYQFrog - Anatomy
In frogs, the number of pairs of cranial nerves arising from the brain are
A9
B10
C12
D6
Answer key (B) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option B

In frogs, there are ten pairs of cranial nerves arising from the brain.
Q3ZoologyNEET UG PYQIntroduction to Tissues
Which type of tissue correctly matches with its location?
ATissue- Smooth muscle; Location- Wall of intestine
BTissue- Areolar tissue; Location- Tendons
CTissue- Transitional epithelium; Location- Tip of nose
DTissue- Cuboidal epithelium; Location- Lining of stomach
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Smooth muscle is a non-striated muscle which is mainly involved in involuntary actions. It is responsible for the contractility of hollow organs, such as blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, the bladder, or the uterus. Areolar tissue is located in the skin; binds the outer layers of the skin to the muscles beneath. Transitional epithelium occurs in the mucosal lining of ureters, a portion of the urethra, and urinary bladder. Cuboidal epithelium mainly occurs in kidney tubules.
Q4ZoologyNEET UG PYQAnimal Tissues: Connective Tissue
Which of the following is not a connective tissue?
ABlood
BAdipose tissue
CCartilage
DNeuroglia
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

Neuroglia, also called glia or glial cells, are non-neuronal cells of the nervous system. Hence they are a component of the neural tissues and not connective tissues.
Q5ZoologyNEET UG PYQAnimal Tissues: Epithelial Tissue - 1
Match list I with list II. List IList II(a) Bronchioles(i)Dense Regular Connective Tissue(b)Goblet Cell(ii)Loose Connective Tissue(c)Tendons(iii)Glandular Tissue(d)Adipose Tissue(iv)Ciliated Epithelium

B(a)- (i); (b) - (ii); (c) - (iii);(d) - (iv)
C(a)- (ii); (b) - (i); (c) - (iv);(d) - (iii)
D(a)- (iii); (b) - (iv); (c) - (ii);(d) - (i)
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Bronchioles-If the columnar or cuboidal cells bear cilia on their free surface they are called ciliated epithelium.. They are mainly present in the inner surface of hollow organs like bronchioles and fallopian tubes. Goblet cell-Columnar or cuboidal cells get specialised for secretion and are called glandular epithelium. Goblet cells of the alimentary canal is an example of glandular tissue. Adipose tissue-Adipose tissue is a type of loose connective tissue located mainly beneath the skin. The cells of this tissue are specialised to store fats. Tendons-Tendons are examples of dense regular connective tissues. They attach skeletal muscles to bones and ligaments which attach one bone to another are examples of this tissue
Q6ZoologyNEET UG PYQAnimal Tissues: Muscular Tissue
Which of the following statements wrongly represents the nature of smooth muscle?
ACommunication among the cells is performed by intercalated discs
BThese muscles are present in the wall of blood vessels
CThese muscle have no striations
DThey are involuntary muscles
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

The smooth muscle fibres taper at both ends (fusiform) and do not show striations. Cell junctions hold them together and they are bundled together in a connective tissue sheath. The wall of internal organs such as the blood vessels, stomach and intestine contains this type of muscle tissue. Smooth muscles are ‘involuntary’ as their functioning cannot be directly controlled. Intercalated discs are the characteristics of cardiac muscle. Communication junctions (intercalated discs) at some fusion points allow the cells to contract as a unit, i.e., when one cell receives a signal to contract, its neighbors are also stimulated to contract.
Q7ZoologyNEET UG PYQCockroach - Morphology
In both sexes of cockroach, a pair of jointed filamentous structures called anal cerci are present on:
A10 segment
B8 and 9 se
C11 segment
D5 segment
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Males bear a pair of short, threadlike anal styles which are absent in females. In both sexes, the 10 segment bears a pair of jointed filamentous structures called anal cerci
Q8ZoologyNEET UG PYQAnimal Tissues: Connective Tissue
In a population of a grasshopper species, the chromosome number of some members is 23 and some other members possess 24 chromosomes. The 23 and 24 chromosome-bearing members in this species are _____.
Aall males
Ball females
Cfemales and males, respectively
Dmales and females, respectively
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

In grasshopper sex determination is type, in which, males have only one X -chromosome besides the autosome (XO), whereas females have a pair of X-chromosome, besides autosomes (XX). Therefore, the individual with 23 chromosomes is a male grasshopper and the one with 24 chromosomes is a female grasshopper.
