Reproductive Health: key facts for NEET

16 facts the paper keeps asking, each with how it is asked. Copy it onto one page of your notebook: that page is this chapter's handbook.

  1. WHO definition of reproductive health

WHO: reproductive health = total well-being in every aspect of reproduction: physical, emotional, behavioural and social.

Asked as: "Which aspect is NOT part of the WHO definition?" or match the four aspects.

  2. Family planning and RCH

India was among the first countries to start national programmes, called 'family planning', in . Today they run as the Reproductive and Child Health Care (RCH) programmes.

Asked as: year family planning began / what RCH stands for.

  3. Saheli

Saheli is an oral pill for females made at CDRI, Lucknow. It is non-steroidal and taken once a week, with very few side effects.

Asked as: "Saheli is: steroidal daily / non-steroidal weekly…" or which institute developed it.

  4. 2011 census and marriage age

2011 census: growth rate was under (). Legal marriage age was raised to for females and for males.

Asked as: match the ages, or reasons for population explosion (fall in death rate, MMR, IMR; more people of reproducible age).

  5. Periodic abstinence

Periodic abstinence means no coitus from day to of the cycle, the fertile period when ovulation is expected.

Asked as: "The fertile period in a -day cycle is…"

  6. Lactational amenorrhea

Lactational amenorrhea: intense lactation stops ovulation, but it works only up to a maximum of months after parturition.

Asked as: True/False "Complete lactation is a natural contraceptive", and its time limit.

  7. Barrier methods

Barriers: Nirodh is a male condom, and condoms also protect against STIs and AIDS. Diaphragms, cervical caps and vaults cover the cervix, are reusable, and are used with spermicidal creams, jellies or foams.

Asked as: "Which contraceptive also prevents STIs?" / which barriers are reusable.

  8. Types of IUDs

IUDs: non-medicated is Lippes loop. Copper-releasing are CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375. Hormone-releasing are Progestasert, LNG-20.

Asked as: match the IUD to its type, or the odd one out.

  9. Mode of action of IUDs

IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms in the uterus. ions reduce sperm motility and fertilising capacity. Hormonal IUDs also make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to sperms.

Asked as: statement-type MCQ on the mode of action of vs hormonal IUD.

  10. Oral pills

Pills (progestogen alone or progestogen–estrogen) are taken daily for days, starting within the first days of the cycle, then a -day gap. They inhibit ovulation and implantation and change the cervical mucus.

Asked as: the -day schedule, or which effect pills do NOT have.

  11. Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception: progestogens, progestogen–estrogen combinations or IUDs, used within hours of coitus.

Asked as: "Emergency contraceptives are effective within ___ hours."

  12. Vasectomy and tubectomy

Vasectomy removes or ties part of the vas deferens through an incision on the scrotum. Tubectomy does the same to the fallopian tube through the abdomen or vagina. Both block gamete transport and are poorly reversible.

Asked as: "Surgical methods prevent gamete formation", correct it to transport.

  13. MTP

MTP was legalised in India in and is relatively safe up to weeks (first trimester). Under the MTP (Amendment) Act, 2017, up to weeks needs registered medical practitioner and – weeks needs .

Asked as: number of RMPs needed for each time window.

  14. STIs

STIs not completely curable: hepatitis-B, genital herpes and HIV. Hepatitis-B and HIV also spread through shared needles, blood transfusion, and from mother to foetus. STIs are highest in the – age group.

Asked as: "Which STI is NOT completely curable?" / complications such as PID, ectopic pregnancy, infertility.

  15. Infertility, IVF–ET, ZIFT, IUT

Infertility means no conception after years of unprotected cohabitation. IVF followed by ET is the 'test tube baby' programme. ZIFT transfers the zygote or embryo with up to blastomeres into the fallopian tube. IUT transfers an embryo with more than blastomeres into the uterus.

Asked as: match ZIFT/IUT with site and blastomere number.

  16. GIFT, ICSI, AI/IUI

GIFT transfers a donor ovum into the fallopian tube. ICSI injects a sperm directly into the ovum. AI/IUI puts semen from the husband or a donor into the vagina or uterus, used for low sperm count.

Asked as: match the ART technique to what is transferred and where.

Trap

In ET, embryos are NOT always put into the uterus. A zygote or embryo with up to 8 blastomeres goes into the fallopian tube (ZIFT). Only embryos with more than 8 go into the uterus (IUT). GIFT transfers a gamete (ovum), not an embryo

How does NEET ask Reproductive Health?

8 real previous-year questions from this chapter, as printed in the paper, each with its worked solution. Answer the first one here with no sign-in.

Q1ZoologyNEET UG PYQAssisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)
Try right here · No sign-in
Embryo with more than 16 blastomeres formed due to in vitro fertilization is transferred into
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

The uterus is the site of embryo implantation. Fusion of the sperm and egg outside the body of the female is the technique used for in vitro fertilisation. In this, implantation of fertilised egg into the uterus of the female is done at the 16 celled stage. The 16 celled stage is known as a morula. Therefore, the correct answer is option d.
Q2ZoologyNEET UG PYQSexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Which of the following sexually transmitted diseases is not completely curable?
AGenital warts
BGenital herpes
CChlamydiasis
DGonorrhoea
Answer key (B) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option B

Genital herpes is caused by a type-ll-herpes simplex virus. At present, there is no cure for the type-II-herpes simplex virus and therefore the disease can not be cured completely. Other non- curable STIs are hepatitis-B and HIV.
Q3ZoologyNEET UG PYQBirth Control Methods
The function of copper ions in copper releasing IUDs is
AThey make the uterus unsuitable for implantation
BThey inhibit ovulation
CThey suppress sperm motility and fertilising capacity of sperms
DThey inhibit gametogenesis
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

Cu interfere in the sperm movement, hence suppress the sperm motility inside the female reproductive tract, and hence fertilising capacity of sperms get suppressed.
Q4ZoologyNEET UG PYQBirth Control Methods
Which of the following is not a natural/traditional contraceptive method?
APeriodic abstinence
BLactational amenorrhea
CVaults
DCoitus interruptus
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

Natural methods work on the principle of avoiding chances of ovum and sperms meeting. Periodic abstinence is one such method in which the couples avoid or abstain from coitus from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle when ovulation could be expected. As chances of fertilisation are very high during this period, it is called the fertile period. Therefore, by abstaining from coitus during this period, conception could be prevented. Withdrawal or coitus interruptus is another method in which the male partner withdraws his penis from the vagina just before ejaculation so as to avoid insemination. Lactational amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) method is based on the fact that ovulation and therefore the cycle do not occur during the period of intense lactation following parturition
Q5ZoologyNEET UG PYQAssisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)
A childless couple can be assisted to have a child through a technique called GIFT. The full form of this technique is
AGamete Inseminated Fallopian Transfer
BGamete Intra Fallopian Transfer
CGamete Internal Fertilization and Transfer
DGerm cell Internal Fallopian Transfer
Answer key (B) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option B

GIFT is Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer technique which includes transfer of an ovum collected from a donor into the fallopian tube of another female who cannot produce a baby, but can provide a suitable environment for fertilisation and further development.
Q6ZoologyNEET UG PYQSexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Which of the following disease is not sexually transmitted?
ATuberculosis
BGonorrhoea
CGenital warts
DSyphilis
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Genital warts, syphilis and gonorrhoea are sexually transmitted diseases. Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This disease spreads through air.
Q7ZoologyNEET UG PYQAssisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)
In which of the following techniques, the embryos are transferred to assist those females who cannot conceive?
AICSI and ZIFT
BGIFT and ICSI
CZIFT and IUT
DGIFT and ZIFT
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

When females cannot conceive then embryo transfer is done by using ZIFT (Zygote Intrafallopian transfer) and IUT (Intra-uterine transfer) technique. In this method ova from females & sperms from male is collected and is induced in the laboratory under simulated conditions to form zygote. The zygote with upto 8 blastomeres is transferred into the fallopian tube through ZIFT or embryos with more than 8 blastomeres are transferred into the uterus through IUT.
