JEE Main percentile vs rank
An NTA percentile score tells you the percentage of candidates in your shift who scored at or below your raw marks. When NTA merges the January and April sessions to publish Common Rank List (CRL) All-India Ranks, the exact rank for a given percentile depends on the total number of unique candidates across both sessions (approximately 13.8 to 14.5 lakh in recent cycles).
Why every rank estimate is a band, not a single integer
At 99.00 percentile, a 13.5 lakh unique pool corresponds to roughly AIR 13,500, whereas a 14.5 lakh unique pool corresponds to roughly AIR 14,500. Any calculator that prints "Your AIR is 13,842" from a mock score is inventing precision. The table below states the honest rank range across the expected candidate pool.
| NTA Percentile Band | Expected CRL Rank Band (~13.8L–14.5L unique pool) |
|---|---|
| 99.90 – 100.00 | AIR 1 – 1,450 |
| 99.75 – 99.89 | AIR 1,451 – 3,600 |
| 99.50 – 99.74 | AIR 3,601 – 7,200 |
| 99.00 – 99.49 | AIR 7,201 – 14,500 |
| 98.50 – 98.99 | AIR 14,501 – 21,800 |
| 98.00 – 98.49 | AIR 21,801 – 29,000 |
| 97.00 – 97.99 | AIR 29,001 – 43,500 |
| 95.00 – 96.99 | AIR 43,501 – 72,500 |
| 92.00 – 94.99 | AIR 72,501 – 1,16,000 |
| 90.00 – 91.99 | AIR 1,16,001 – 1,45,000 |
