Digestion and Absorption: NEET PYQs and weightage

Digestion and Absorption carries 3.4 of 100 Zoology marks in NEET by past-paper share: 22 of the 648 tagged NEET Zoology PYQs in the ViJEEta bank (NEET 2013–2026). It ranks 15 of 17 Zoology chapters.

Not in the NEET syllabus now. NTA removed Digestion and Absorption from NEET-UG; it is still in NCERT and school exams. Spend NEET time on the chapters below instead. The PYQs here are from before it was removed.

How the weight is computed: this chapter's tagged NEET PYQs divided by all tagged NEET Zoology PYQs in the bank (22 of 648), times 100, with repeated questions counted once. The bank does not store the year of each NEET question, so none is printed. Computed from the bank at build time. Updated 19 Oct 2026.

How does NEET ask Digestion and Absorption?

8 real previous-year questions from this chapter, as printed in the paper, each with its worked solution. Answer the first one here with no sign-in.

Identify the cells whose secretion protects the lining of gastro-intestinal tract from various enzymes.
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Goblet cells secrete mucus which plays an important role in lubrication and protection of the mucosal epithelium by the highly concentrated HCl.While oxyntic cells secrete HCl and intrinsic factors.

Chief cells secrete proenzyme pepsinogen.
Q2ZoologyNEET UG PYQDigestion of food
The initial step in the digestion of milk in humans is carried out by?
ATrypsin
BRennin
CPepsin
DLipase
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

In humans, pepsin is involved in the initial digestion of proteins stomach while rennin is a proteolytic enzyme in infants (not in adults) and calves which helps in the digestion of milk proteins. Pepsin acts on water-soluble caseinogen (milk protein) to form soluble 'casein'. This combines with calcium salts to form insoluble calcium paracaseinate, which gets readily digested enzymatically. While lipases are involved in the digestion of fats.

The trypsin enzyme is present in pancreatic juice in an inactive form i.e. trypsinogen. It is involved in the digestion of protein, peptones, and proteoses into dipeptides.
Q3ZoologyNEET UG PYQDigestive system
Which of the following guards the opening of hepatopancreatic duct into the duodenum?
ASemilunar valve
BIleocaecal valve
CPyloric sphincter
DSphincter of Oddi
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

The sphincter of Oddi guards the opening of the hepatopancreatic duct into the duodenum. The hepatopancreatic duct brings secretion of the liver as well as pancreas to the duodenum.Whereas the pyloric sphincter guards the opening of the stomach into the duodenum.

Ileocaecal valve- It guards the passage of undigested, unabsorbed food into caecum of large intestine through this valve.

Semilunar valve- Present in heart.

CA – (iii), B – (ii), C – (i), D – (iv)
DA – (iii), B – (i), C – (ii), D – (iv)
Answer key (B) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option B

Crypts of Lieberkuhn are present in the small intestine. Glisson's capsule is present in the liver. Islets of Langerhans constitute the endocrine portion of pancreas and consist of three cells i.e., alpha, beta and delta cells. Brunner's glands are found in the submucosa of the duodenum.
Q5ZoologyNEET UG PYQDigestion of food
The enzyme enterokinase helps in conversion of
ACaseinogen into casein
BPepsinogen into pepsin
CProtein into polypeptides
DTrypsinogen into trypsin
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

Trypsinogen is present in inactive form in pancreatic juice. So, enterokinase enzymes convert inactive trypsinogen to active trypsin. This in turn activates the other enzymes in the pancreatic juice.
Q6ZoologyNEET UG PYQDigestive glands
Which of the following options best represents the enzyme composition of pancreatic juice?
Apeptidase, amylase, pepsin, rennin
Blipase, amylase, trypsinogen, procarboxypeptidase
Camylase, peptidase, trypsinogen, rennin
Damylase, pepsin, trypsinogen, maltase
Answer key (B) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option B

Rennin and Pepsin enzymes are present in the gastric juice. Maltase is present in the intestinal juice. The pancreatic juice contains enzymes such as lipase, amylase, trypsinogen, procarboxypeptidase, chymotrypsinogen, nucleases, and elastase.
Q7ZoologyNEET UG PYQDigestive system
Which of the following gastric cells indirectly help in erythropoiesis?
AMucous cells
BGoblet cells
CChief cells
DParietal cells
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

Parietal or oxyntic cell is a source of HCl and intrinsic factor. HCl converts iron present in diet from ferric to ferrous form so that it can be absorbed easily and used during erythropoiesis. Intrinsic factor is essential for the absorption of vitamin B and its deficiency causes pernicious anemia. While mucous/goblet cells secrete mucus which helps in lubrication.

Chief cells secrete proenzyme pepsinogen.
Q8ZoologyNEET UG PYQDigestive system
A baby boy aged two years is admitted to playschool and passes through a dental check-up. The dentist observed that the boy had twenty teeth. Which teeth were absent?
APre-molars
BMolars
CIncisors
DCanines
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Total number of teeth in human child = 20. Premolars are absent in primary dentition.

Why does Digestion and Absorption show "–" until you answer 3 questions?

Unknown is not zero. Until you answer at least 3 graded questions in Digestion and Absorption, ViJEEta shows – instead of a zero or a 50% default. Book exercises can raise chapter mastery up to 0.60, adaptive practice up to 0.75, and only a timed chapter test or mock can certify 0.80 and above.

What happens when you test Digestion and Absorption?

Every chapter test is 25 questions. It starts at moderate difficulty and adapts after each saved answer. If you open a solution before answering, that attempt earns no credit, so your mastery stays honest.
