Transport in Plants: NEET PYQs and weightage

Transport in Plants carries 2.0 of 100 Botany marks in NEET by past-paper share: 16 of the 793 tagged NEET Botany PYQs in the ViJEEta bank (NEET 2013–2026). It ranks 18 of 21 Botany chapters.

Not in the NEET syllabus now. NTA removed Transport in Plants from NEET-UG; it is still in NCERT and school exams. Spend NEET time on the chapters below instead. The PYQs here are from before it was removed.

How the weight is computed: this chapter's tagged NEET PYQs divided by all tagged NEET Botany PYQs in the bank (16 of 793), times 100, with repeated questions counted once. The bank does not store the year of each NEET question, so none is printed. Computed from the bank at build time. Updated 19 Oct 2026.

How does NEET ask Transport in Plants?

8 real previous-year questions from this chapter, as printed in the paper, each with its worked solution. Answer the first one here with no sign-in.

Q1BotanyNEET UG PYQTranspiration

Stomatal movement is not affected by
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Light, temperature, and concentration of CO affect the opening and closing of stomata while it is not affected by O concentration. High temperature and high intensity of light cause a significant effect on stomatal movement. Low levels of COin the leaves cause the opening of stomata and a high concentration of carbon dioxide causes the closing of stomata.
Q2BotanyNEET UG PYQMeans of Transport
Which of the following is not observed during an apoplastic pathway?
AMovement of water occurs through intercellular spaces and wall of the cells
BThe movement does not involve crossing of cell membrane
CThe movement is aided by cytoplasmic streaming
DApoplast is continuous and does not provide any barrier to water movement
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

Apoplast is the system of cell walls which is continuous throughout the plant except in some parts like Casparian strips in the roots. Therefore it cannot be aided by cytoplasmic streaming and cannot occur through plasmodesmata.
Q3BotanyNEET UG PYQMeans of Transport
Movement and accumulation of ions across a membrane against their concentration gradient can be explained by
AFacilitated Diffusion
BPassive Transport
CActive Transport
DOsmosis
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

Active transport uses energy to transport and pump molecules against a concentration gradient. These substances move from a low concentration to a high concentration (‘uphill’ transport).
Q4BotanyNEET UG PYQTranspiration
Given below are two statements: Statement I: The forces generated by transpiration can lift a xylem-sized column of water over 130 meters height. Statement II: Transpiration cools leaf surfaces sometimes 10 to 15 degrees, by evaporative cooling. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
ABoth Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
BStatement I is correct, but Statement II is incorrect.
CStatement I is incorrect, but Statement II is correct.
DBoth Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Answer key (D) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option D

Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Q5BotanyNEET UG PYQPhloem Transport: Flow from Source to Sink
A few drops of sap were collected by cutting across a plant stem by a suitable method. The sap was tested chemically. Which one of the following test results indicates that it is phloem sap?
AAlkaline
BLow refractive index
CAbsence of sugar
DAcidic
Answer key (A) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option A

Phloem sap is generally alkaline with pH ranging from 7.3 - 8.5. Alkaline nature of phloem sap is due to the active transport of H ions out of phloem to the surrounding cells during sucrose loading. Hence, the chemical test for alkalinity will help to identify that the exudated sap is phloem sap.
Q6BotanyNEET UG PYQLong Distance Transport of Water
A column of water within xylem vessels of tall trees does not break under its weight because of
ADissolved sugars in water
BTensile strength of water
CLignification of xylem vessels
DPositive root pressure
Answer key (B) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option B

A column of water within xylem vessels of tall trees does not break under its weight because of high tensile strength of water, an ability to resist a pulling force which depends on cohesion, adhesion and surface tension.
Q7BotanyNEET UG PYQPlant-Water Relations
Match List-I with List-II. List IList II(a) Cohesion(i)More attraction in liquid phase(b) Adhesion(ii)Mutual attraction among water molecules(c) Surface tension(iii)Water loss in liquid phase(d) Guttation(iv)Attraction towards polar surfaces Choose the correct answer from the options given below.
A(a)-(iii), (b)-(i), (c)- (iv), (d)-(ii)
B(a)-(ii), (b)-(i), (c)- (iv), (d)-(iii)
C(a)-(ii), (b)-(iv), (c)- (i), (d)-(iii)
D(a)-(iv), (b)-(iii), (c)- (ii), (d)-(i)
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

Cohesion – The mutual attraction between water molecules. Adhesion – Attraction of water molecules to polar surfaces (such as the surface of tracheary elements). Surface Tension – Water molecules are attracted to each other in the liquid phase more than to water in the gas phase. Effects of root pressure are also observable at night and early morning when evaporation is low, and excess water collects in the form of droplets around special openings of veins near the tip of grass blades, and leaves of many herbaceous parts. Such water loss in its liquid phase is known as guttation.
Q8BotanyNEET UG PYQPlant-Water Relations
The water potential of pure water is
AMore than zero but less than one
BMore than one
CZero
DLess than zero
Answer key (C) & worked solution

Correct answer: Option C

By convention, the water potential of pure water at standard temperature, which is not under any pressure, is taken to be zero.

Why does Transport in Plants show "–" until you answer 3 questions?

Unknown is not zero. Until you answer at least 3 graded questions in Transport in Plants, ViJEEta shows – instead of a zero or a 50% default. Book exercises can raise chapter mastery up to 0.60, adaptive practice up to 0.75, and only a timed chapter test or mock can certify 0.80 and above.

What happens when you test Transport in Plants?

Every chapter test is 25 questions. It starts at moderate difficulty and adapts after each saved answer. If you open a solution before answering, that attempt earns no credit, so your mastery stays honest.
