Work, Energy and Power: NEET PYQs and weightage

Work, Energy and Power carries 3.6 of 100 Physics marks in NEET by past-paper share: 27 of the 758 tagged NEET Physics PYQs in the ViJEEta bank (NEET 2013–2026). It ranks 12 of 30 Physics chapters.

How the weight is computed: this chapter's tagged NEET PYQs divided by all tagged NEET Physics PYQs in the bank (27 of 758), times 100, with repeated questions counted once. The bank does not store the year of each NEET question, so none is printed. Computed from the bank at build time. Updated 19 Oct 2026.

Work, Energy and Power: formula sheet for NEET

14 formulas, each with when to use it. Copy it onto one page of your notebook: that page is this chapter's handbook.

  1. Work by a constant force

Use it when: the force stays constant over the displacement; is the angle between and ( gives negative work, gives zero)

  2. Work-energy theorem

Use it when: speeds are asked but time is not; add the work of every force acting, friction included

  3. Kinetic energy

Use it when: finding speed from energy; is never negative

  4. Work by a variable force

Use it when: changes with position or an – graph is given (area below the -axis counts as negative)

  5. Conservation of mechanical energy

Use it when: only conservative forces (gravity, spring) do work

  6. With non-conservative forces

Use it when: friction or air resistance acts; is usually negative and depends on the path

  7. Gravitational PE

Use it when: is small compared with the Earth's radius; the speed at the bottom of a smooth incline of height is also , whatever the angle

  8. Force from potential energy

Use it when: is given and the force is needed; a conservative force does zero work over a closed path

  9. Spring

Use it when: is the stretch or compression measured from the natural length

  10. Work by a spring force

Use it when: the block moves from to ; it is negative while the spring is being stretched or compressed further

  11. Block on a spring

Use it when: a block oscillates on a smooth surface; for maximum compression by a moving body, set (add on the right if there is friction)

  12. Power

Use it when: a motor, pump or lift runs at constant speed; for a lift,

  13. 1-D elastic collision with m2 at rest

Use it when: a head-on collision conserves both momentum and KE; equal masses exchange velocities, and fraction of KE transferred

  14. Completely inelastic collision (m2 at rest)

Use it when: the bodies stick together; momentum is conserved and KE is not

Trap

Using K_i + V_i = K_f + V_f when friction is present. Once friction or any non-conservative force does work, switch to W_net = ΔK or E_f − E_i = W_nc, and count friction's work as negative.

Why does Work, Energy and Power show "–" until you answer 3 questions?

Unknown is not zero. Until you answer at least 3 graded questions in Work, Energy and Power, ViJEEta shows – instead of a zero or a 50% default. Book exercises can raise chapter mastery up to 0.60, adaptive practice up to 0.75, and only a timed chapter test or mock can certify 0.80 and above.

What happens when you test Work, Energy and Power?

Every chapter test is 25 questions. It starts at moderate difficulty and adapts after each saved answer. If you open a solution before answering, that attempt earns no credit, so your mastery stays honest.
